Does anyone else get creepd out when singing some worship songs? I couldn’t bring myself to sing the lyric, “I want to be your laid-back lover.” It would not have surprised me if a student had yelled-out “Sexy Jesus!” as a proclamation of worship. One of the issues with Baal worship was the blending of worship and sexuality.
It can be confusing for adolescents to sing lyrics which have a culturally sexual overtones during worship. Also, how many of our students are able to handle a deep, emotional relationship like marriage? We watch them go from one immature relationship to the next and yet there is an expectation that they can maturely wrap their psyches around intimate worship songs on a more than emotional level. The solution? I don’t have all of the answers, but I have some ideas. Discipleship and worship should be connected. Discipleship should be educational and relational so that a student’s worship comes from a biblical and emotional place.
